Before you ask — we do not serve crayfish. It is just a name. Everybody asks, and we think that is quite funny.

Three things in one place

Eat, sleep, and stay a while

The diner, the caravan park behind it and The Lazy Whale guest house are all on the same premises and all run by the same family. You can arrive with a caravan and never move the car again.

A hand-crafted guest house on the premises. Three bedrooms, sleeps six, own kitchen, and the dogs are welcome.

Right behind the restaurant. Small, quiet and open all year, with the tennis courts outside the gate and the golf club five minutes on foot.

Draught, spirits, wine and a fridge full of whatever came up on the truck. Pull up a chair and somebody will tell you how the town used to work.

The town

Ask about Kleinzee and you will be here a while

This was a De Beers diamond town, closed to outsiders for most of a century. You needed a permit to come in and your car got searched on the way out. The mines wound down in 2009 and De Beers left in 2012, taking most of the town with them — about a thousand people stayed.

What is left is a small town on a wild, empty stretch of the Atlantic, quietly finding other things to do. There are oysters growing in the old dam now. People stop in for lunch and stay for the afternoon because somebody started telling them about it. We do not mind at all.
